STORM RAGES ACROSS BASSINGBOURN AIRFIELD
SAT and SUN, OCTOBER 26 and 27, 2002 |

| Report from Richard Austin K144

On Thursday the weather forecast warned of possible storm damage winds for the weekend so the prospect did not look good!
By Friday p.m. at Bassingbourn things looked worse, it seems the airfield had been double booked by a motor club for a track day and their booking was confirmed before ours. High winds still forecast.
SATURDAY: Motor Club event under way, although they could not erect their marquee in the high winds. Anyway the wind was too high for safe sailing varying 20-30 m.p.h. so landyaching educational day visits to Cambridge and Duxford for shopping and sightseeing. During the afternoon the decision was taken due to the worsening weather conditions to cancel the weekend's event so it could be held again on another date (to be advised). The usual evening gathering at the Queen Adelaide in Croydon was well attended and enjoyed.
SUNDAY: The real storm started about 3.00 a.m. and built up from there. By 10.00 a.m. winds were 40-50 m.p.h. on the airfield and by 11 o'clock the clubhouse anomometer was showing a constant 55-65 m.p.h. winds with the highest gusts touching 80 m.p.h.
Due to high winds and a double booking problem on Saturday the airfield event was cancelled and so will be run on another date (to be confirmed).
[Wind speed gusts of 80 m.p.h. (130k.p.h.) were recorded on the club house anemometer during Sunday morning.]
