On the weekend of March 15-16, the Brean LYC held a gathering of landsailors on a somewhat surprising pristine Brean Beach in southern England. Gareth
Rowland travelled to Paldiski in Estonia for the 2003 European Ice Sailing
Championships but was there for only a short time before the event was
relocated to Bjorkvik, just outside of Stockholm, Sweden, where there is a
large area of sea ice. Racing commenced at midday last Wednesday (March
12). There was little wind initially but later on some good racing was
staged. Thursday it blew very strong and for a time ice sailing was
postponed because of excessive conditions but some racing was held later in
the day. On Friday sufficient racing was held before the event was declared
over. Gareth has sent in some stunning images which have been loaded on to
the site.

PADDY SATURDAY IN IRELAND
Alan Watson has filed report and photos from the latest Irish landsailors outing on Laytown Beach north of Dublin last Saturday (March 9). Alan reports a good turnout of mini-yachts (Bootleggers, Pottys and Ludics) as well as a Class 5 fleet. Sailors came from all over the south, some of the keener ones travelling 200 miles from Cork. Laytown Beach, for the uninitiated, is a few miles north of Dublin, and the location of choice for Irish landsailors with miles of good hard sand and the odd stream to keep things interesting... DUTCH CLASS 5 PILOT KILLED
Dutch landyacht pilot Rinus Hogerheijde was killed in a landsailing accident during racing on Terschelling, a small island of the coast of The Netherlands, on Sunday, February 24. Ute Vrijburg from Terschelling has been good enough to translate an article which appeared in the local newspaper announcing Rinus' death, and the causes. Following are details from the newspaper article. Ute asks that we please excuse her English!
Rinus Hogerheijde from Landerum Terschelling, 52 years, died in a landyacht accident. The accident took place on Sunday 24th February 2002 on the beach of Terschelling near Landmark 7. Saturday the races were cancelled due to strong winds. Sunday the wind was better for landyachts and the race started. Around 11 o'clock, it happened. The wind was strong, Rinus had made a correction not to hit another landyacht friend. The landyachts hit. Rinus did not survive it. The other landyacht friend is OK. Two ambulances and a trauma helicopter were quick to the site of the accident, but there was nothing that could help Rinus. The police have taken the two landyachts for technical inspection. The mayor of Terschelling met Sunday night with the "Brandaris" Landyacht Club and called the accident 'bad luck'.
Rinus has been landyachting for many years now. His passion was sailing the Class 5, enjoying the weekly trips along the beautiful beach of Terschelling with H137. Rinus, his son Guido (H187), and a few other landyacht friends on Terschelling, were the people on Terschelling to join on a trip to Amerlandergat; they were the only guys who knew where to find the hard beach on an often too late started way back to Paal 8. In January Rinus won the Isolabella Cup at Terschelling. Rinus was Treasurer of the Landyacht Club "Brandaris" at Terschelling.
We will miss this nice person!
In respect of what happend the following races have been cancelled:
Brandaris Challenge : March 9 + 10
IJmuiden Open: March 2 + 3

SAD PASSING OF ROBERT GREEN
The world of landsailing lost one of its true gentlemen on Wednesday, January 16 when Robert Green of Riversdale Farm, Strensall in York, England, passed away after a short illness. His passing was heartfelt right across the globe. Robert was not only well known as a great landsailing competitor, mentor, whit and prankster but also as owner of Yorker Landyachts, the manufacturer of the Mike Hampton-designed Class 5 YOTT and more recently the miniyacht "The Bootlegger". Robert was also President of the British Landsailing Federation and his passing will be felt for many years to come. Landsailors all over the world offered their condolences to Robert's wife, Jackie, son Dave and the rest of the Green family in their time of sorrow.
ROBERT GREEN MEMORIAL MESSAGE PAGE
A Condolences Page was set up on this web site soon after Robert's passing so people could leave messages, be they words of condolence or merely recounting some of the times we had all shared with Robert. BRITISH ICE TEAM IN SWEDEN
British iceboaters Gareth Rowland and Chris Williams are presently icesailing in Torsaker on the east coast of Sweden. The pair have had a fickle time at Tsrsaker with no wind and shallow ice hindering them these past two days. They are continuing their search for sailable ice with forays to little lakes around the Torsaker region. On Friday night temps were below freezing for the first time in a few days down (-6F) but the covering of snow on the ice was acting like an insulation blanket and melting any extra ice water the colder temps were giving. The aerial images of the Tors'ker region where Gareth and Chris are located, check out the web site Torsaker and Lake Malmjarn. Gareth phoned on Saturday morning to say that the ice, although only marginal at 2 inches thick, was suitable for sailing and he and Chris were planning on a full day on nearby Lake Malmjarn.

Assisted by the Auckland Land Yacht Club the OBSS ran an excellent three-day event although at times it was marred by inclement weather. Racing Sunday was finally abandoned after heavy rains set in and the wind disappeared in the early afternoon only minute sbefore Class 5 were due to set off on their first race of the final day. DUTCH FEDERATION NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Dutch Nationals were held October 27-28 at the venue of last year's World Championships on the island of Terschelling. According to Floor Lagerwey, President of the Terschelling Landyacht Club "Brandaris", The Open Dutch Championship was held under pefect conditions. "For the first time Class 8 sailed together with the other landyacht classes. Each class had a separate start. The organisation laid out two courses. There were more records; the number of participants was never so high in a National Championship," said Floor. "The Terschellinger Zeilwagen Vereniging Brandaris is looking back on a very successful weekend. We hope to invite more pilots on the next event in March 9 and 10, 2002. In the Standart class the youngest competitor was Mendel van Biert, age 10 years. His brother Lindert, 11 years was doing slightly better. They managed to sail their yachts in this strong field very well. The wind was ranging from 8 to 12 m/s. New Dutch talents!" Photos are posted on the Strandzeilen web site www.strandzeilen.nl

The two-day regatta was originally to be held at Kariotahi, a west coast beach 40-minutes to the south west of Auckland city but because of wind conditions was moved to Orewa Beach about 20 minutes drive north-east of Auckland city. On Sunday the event was transferred to Kariotahi Beach but the expected south-westerly winds failed to materialise.

The hardy landsailing trio of Chris "Babs" Wright, Andy Parr and Dave "Whiskers" Shaw made their biennial pilgrimage across the Irish Sea over the week of July 23 to 30 to sail one of their favourite spots in the world - the Dingle Peninsula in south-west Ireland. Not only is the area one of the picturesque and hospitable spots on the planet, renown for rugged scenery, lovely people, fine seafood and the Irish elixir of life, Guinness, it is in the words of the Irish, damn good craic! The "Three Musketeers" went with Class 5s and mini yachts in hand to sail the long Brandon Bay and other spots such as Inch and were joined over the weekend by Irish landsailors Alan Watson, Coleman Billings and Jim Hickey and young son. BLOKART INTERNATIONAL 100KM MURIWAI ENDURO
The re-run of the Auckland Land Yacht Club's annual 100 kilometre winter endurance race on Muriwai Beach, New Zealand, was held on Saturday, June 30. The Blokart International-sponsored event attracted a big fleet of landyachts from the big Class 3s to a large contingent of nifty little miniyachts, Blokarts and WindThrills. A report and photos has been posted.

KIWIS LATE AFTERNOON SAIL
Several Auckland Land Yacht Club members decided to take advantage of a late afternoon tide and go for a sail on the northern end of Muriwai Beach last Sunday (June 17). They took along Bruce Kendall and a friend to have a try-out before Bruce heads back overseas this coming weekend for more international boardsailing competition. Geoff Hall was there with his digital camera to take some great photos.

KIWIS OUT AT KARIOTAHI
The Auckland Land Yacht Club made the most of the weather conditions on Sunday (June 17) going out for a sail at Kariotahi, one of the club's west coast beach venues which is about 40 minutes drive south-west of the Auckland City central busness district. A good number of club members braved coldish temperatures (well chilly for the Kiwis) in the early morning call out - the raceday kicked off at 9.30am! Geoff Hall was there with his digital camera to record some of the sailing. Check the Kiwis out.

WIRRAL SYC HOSTS BFSLYC CHAMPS REGATTA AT HOYLAKE
The Wirral Sand Yacht Club plays host to the latest round of the British Federation of Sand and Land Yacht Clubs' Championships at Hoylake this weekend - Saturday, June 16 and Sunday, June 17. Gareth Rowland will there and, between races, plans to file photos and results of the weekend's racing. Gareth is stopping in the Wirral clubhouse in the grounds of the former Parade School and now the renovated Wirral Community Centre. Watch out for Gareth's reports, one of which we hope will be filed from the Plasterer's Arms, a renown Hoylake drinking establishment were all landsailors retire to for a pint of Old Speckled Hen and a natter at the end of a day's racing out on the Hoylake banks. LATEST UPDATE: Gareth has filed reports and photos on both days' racing.

BRIT REGATTA AT CEFN
The previous round of the British Federation's Championships was staged in glorious conditions at Cefn Sidan in Southern Wales on Saturday and Sunday (May 12 and 13). First reports from the beach were that it was the best
ever conditions experienced at Cefn - 70 degrees, shorts & t-shirt weather and a dry beach like a billiard table. UPDATE: Chris Wright has filed a full report on both days' racing as well as results.

KIWIS OUT AGAIN
The Auckland Land Yacht Club had an outing on Sunday, May 6 at the West Coast beach of Kariotahi, about 50 minutes drive south from Auckland City CBD along the main southern arterial motorway. The venue, another black sand beach like Muriwai (the club's main sailing venue), is on the southern side of the big Manukau Harbour. Unfortunately for those dedicated landsailors who turned up, Mother Nature failed to attend. With no sailing the day was spent sitting about in the warm sun discussing things landsailors are apt to talk about on windless days.

CHILEANS BRAVE COLD TEMPS
Juan Enrique Qui-ones from Santiago in Chile along with some friends over the weekend of April 28 and 29 drove 300 kilometres through some pretty cold conditions and barren landscape to a dry lake just inside the Argentinian border for a spot of landsailing. See Juan's report and photos

LANDSAILING IN NZ AGAIN AND AGAIN
Three times in one week... Sunday, April 22 (Muriwai Beach) then Wednesday, April 25 and three days later on Saturday, April 28 the Auckland Land Yacht Club has been out sailing, making the most of the good landsailing conditions that New Zealand is experiencing. On the Sunday club had an outing on their favourite piece of landsailing real estate on the West Coast, 40 minutes drive west of the city of Auckland (home of the America's Cup!). Geoff Hall reported on a good day's sailing illustrated with some great pixs of the Class 3s and 5s on the beach's black iron sands. A large number of club members made it to Orewa Beach on the Wednesday (27 boats were rigged) but the wind failed to appear. They were their again on the Saturday and were blessed with more than enough wind and those who made the trip to Orewa Beach again had the time of their life with brilliant 15 knot easterlies. Orewa Beach, an eastern 3-kilometre strip of sand about 20 minutes drive north of the CBD of Auckland is restricted to landsailing between Easter and October 25 each year. Geoff Hall sent in some great pictures of both days at Orewa and Mervyn Hurley filed a report on the two Orewa days.

YORK LANDYACHTING REGATTA
The latest round of the British Federation's Championships was held at Elvington, York, over the weekend of April 20-21. With no wind on the Saturday the British pilots had nothing to do but amble around the airfield or, in the case of Jon Cookson, bend his knees and pour himself into a Seagull Ludic for a burn along the tarmac. Although Gareth Rowland wasn't sailing he and Lincolnshire Club Secretary Phil Sharp made the trip over to Elvington to deliver a fridge of all things to Chris wright for Chris' new campervan. While there Gareth took some photos and filed a report. On the Sunday things changed, the wind came up and gradually increased as the day progressed. Some of the pilots had a hairy time sailing the tricky course set on the airfield runway and perimeter track. Read Chris Wright's summary of Sunday's escapades and a round up of results. Chris' report is illustrated by some fine photos from Mark "SoC" Lloyd.

LANDSAILING DOWN IN NEW ZEALAND
Last weekend (April 7 a group of Auckland Land Yacht Club members and some newbies to the club ventured out to their favourite haunt, the 50-kilometre long Muriwai Beach, about 40 minutes west of the city. Mother Nature has been particularly hard on the Kiwis so far this year and they haven't had too many opportunities of tide and wind in the right combinations for sailing. That changed last weekend and they were out in numbers having a thrash around in the strong south-westerly "breeze". Read about their antics on the Muriwai Beach web page:

WELSH LANDYACHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The British landsailors, starved of racing due to their venues being off limits by the Foot & Mouth crisis, descended on the tiny seaside village of Pendine in Southern Wales last weekend (April 7 and 8) for the Welsh Landyachting Championships which replaced the cancelled Mablethorpe regatta. Because of F&M outbreaks, govt agricultural agencies and council authorities have restricted access to beaches and subsequently most of the British Land and Sand Yachting Federation's BFSLYC Championship Rounds have had to be cancelled or deferred till later in the year. However, Pendine Sands on Carmarthen Bay in Southern Wales has remained open and local residents Andy Parr and Dave Shaw pieced together a regatta to ease the English landsailors' boredom. The two-day event kicked off last Saturday (April 7) and finished Sunday afternoon. Gareth Rowland was there with his trusty cellphone, laptop and digital camera filing reports throughout the weekend.

KRAB RALLY 2001
The annual Krab Rally, said to be Belgium's largest race of the year, was staged at De Panne, Belgium over the weekend of March 10 and 11. Held over two days with time trials on the Saturday. The time trials are run over a course from De Panne to Koxyd, then from Koxyd down into France to Dunkirk and from Dunkirk back to De Panne over a 40mm lap. The fastest to complete one lap in each of the classes is declared the winner. Yesterday (Sunday) normal 30-minute races are staged although some find it difficult after the infamous Saturday night party! The Krab Rally attracts pilots from all over Europe. Our Gareth is a previous winner although last year finished well off the money after suffering some frontal damage (no! not at the bar). This year Gareth is elsewhere (Sweden) so the Class 3 pilots breathed a sigh of relief knowing that their fearsome opponent K800 isn't on the De Panne beach.
