2004 AMERICA'S CUP
LANDSAILING REGATTA

SUNDAY, MARCH 21 - FRIDAY, MARCH 26, 2004

Over 100 registrations and 80 pilots enjoyed warm temperatures of 94F and lighter winds at the beginning of the event leading to 30mph winds and 70F temperatures later in the week.

Racing occurred every day with the exception of Sunday, March 21, the first day of the competition. Most classes had a seven-race series out of a possible 10 race series.

Most races were run windward - leeward with southwest winds and later in the week Northwest winds at Ivanpah dry lake, just south of Primm, Nevada, near Las Vegas.

In Race 4, FISLY Class 5/Fed 5 pilot Mark Harris sailed six laps in an exciting 20 minute windward/leeward race hitting 52 mph on the downwind legs. He needed a new front tire after hat race! In a later FISLY Class 5 race, cancelled because of starting period winds exceeding 30mph, a lap only took only 1 min 35 sec for US94 sailing a 4.0m2 storm sail!

The competition between the boats in the Miniyacht Class saw both Manta Singles, Siroccos, and a large fleet of Blokarts racing together in close mark roundings and fast timed races around closer marks all week. Many Blokarts sported full body fairings to enhance their top speed.
