Members of the
New Zealand team competing at PACRIM 2000 packed their yachts in under
12 hours. made easier with the guidance and expertise from a Everything was set to kick off at 9.00am and it was expected that two days would be needed to shelve everything. Two southern-based landsailors (Ian and Andie) were forgiven by Bill and Kay for having faulty wristwatches and arriving at 5.30am but a family of scalliwags and another Westie (all shall remain nameless, aye Phil) were not so accordingly welcomed when they arrived several hours after kickoff. They were on the receiving end of some very bright quips, surprising for so early on a Saturday morning. Bill Nairn and his nephew Ron had already "scouted out" the container and had worked out pretty much how things would be loaded. With able support from Richard Pilkington and Phil Augustin the order of the day was pretty quickly established. Surprisingly it didn't take as long as originally thought, a testament to the planning ovver the preceding days. By 6.30, it was very much over with just one or two items to be added over the coming days before the container was picked up and taken to the port for loading aboard the Columbus Line container ship. The 15 landyachts (one for spares) niched in well but it was surprising how little room was left once all the ancilliary equipment had been stowed. The whole exercise was a team effort and everyone can congratulate themselves on getting the task done without any major difficulties or any injuries other than a few scrapped knuckles. Bill Nairn's lovely wife, Kay, was again the perfect hostess keeping everyone watered and fed throughout the day. AKNOWLEDGEMENT
BIG
THANKS HAS TO GO TO Sport clubs and associations today cannot exist without sponsorship and landyachting is no exception. Had it not been for the generous assistance provided by Columbus Line New Zealand it is almost certain that less than half of the New Zealand team would have been able to afford to go to PACRIM 2000. The shipping company provided the 20-foot container free of charge as well as shipping the landyachts to Los Angeles and return. An amazing gesture in anyone's books. Thank you Columbus Line. Also a big thanks to Columbus Line personnel Katherine Marlow and Andrew McGowan. |
