2008 FISLY WORLDS at RADA TILLY
Gareth Rowland, having secured a doctor's clearance by the skin of his teeth after breaking an ankle falling off a Segway at Christmas time, was last week in Patagonia along with British compatriot Tim Spiers.
The pair were attending the 2008 FISLY World Championships at Rada Tilly, in Patagonia, [Argentina] which ran from Saturday, February 9th to Friday, February 15th. The event attracted pilots from all over the world including New Zealand, Australia, Belgium, France and Germany. Gareth provided regular reports by mobile and email of his journey to the event which included a 17-hour flight from Gatwick to Buenos Aries, a few days R&R stopover at the famous Argentinian tourist spot Igasscu Falls then a 3-hour flight to Rada Tilly on the east coast of Patagonia. And, then ensconced in his hostelria two blocks back from the beach, Gareth beamed out reports on the 2008 FISLY World's pagentry, racing and the socialising.
Following the regatta, Gareth, Tim and Tim's girlfriend, Megan, went on the road, heading across Patagonia to Chile on their way to Ushuaia, the most southern city in the world. They've already encountered drama and perplexing problems only tourists can find in the middle of barren Patagonia. They've since faced frustration with Chilean Customs Officers, unbelievable delays at airports and cancelled flights with Tim and Megan finally ending up desperate to get a connecting flight to Buenos Aires and having to sit around an airport just inside the Patagonian border with Chile till 4am in the morning.
Tim and Megan have now moved on and Gareth, with some luck on his side, managed a flight down to Ushuaia, the southern-most city in the world, and is enjoying the splendours of the region of mountainous, glacier-ridden Tierra del Fuego, staying on the area of the Beagle Channel, named after the famous mid-1800s sailing vessel "The Beagle" sailed under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy with the then budding scientist Charles Darwin on board who wrote an amazing account of voyage. FitzRoy was later to become a Governor of New Zealand whilst Darwin went on to change the course of modern-day scientific thinking on the evolution of the species.

What is Landsailing?
There are two types of land yacht sailing at Mablethorpe - Class 3 and Class 5. Depending on wind conditions the larger yachts are capable of speeds in excess of 80mph. The smaller yachts are still capable of reaching 60mph; acceleration from 10-60mph is less than 10 seconds, all this and no engine, no noise.
The Lincolnshire Club has a two-seater yacht which can be used by club members and people who have never sailed before. Also the Secretary, the current British & European Landyacht Champion and a Qualified Instructor has a small yacht suitable for young children. While the two-seater is not available to sail at the above event, tide times for suitable sailing are available.
See you on the Beach!
