GREENBIRD BREAKS THE BARRIER!
RICHARD JENKINS IN EXCESS OF 120MPH
|

|
|
On Thursday afternoon (US Nevada time) the world wind-powered record of 112mph was massively broken by Richard Jenkins in the British-sponsored Green Bird at Ivanpah Drylake, a dry alkaline lakebed 36 miles outside of Las Vegas on the border of California and Nevada. Jenkins has been attempting for several years, initially with the Windjet, to break the 112.7mph set by Bob Dill of Burlington, Vermont, in 2002 in his massive wing-powered craft the Iron Duck, incidentally set at Ivanpah also.
On Tuesday, with reasonable winds across the playa in the vicinity of 24mph, Jenkins did several runs late in the afternoon getting Green Bird within sniffing distance of Dill's record pulling around 107mph but just when his runs were climbing in speed, the wind dropped away however that's typical of Ivanpah at this time of year.
Wednesday there was no wind but a good blow was predicted for today (Thursday) and the forecasters were spot on.
It was Jenkins perfect window of opportunity with 50-plus mph wind speeds... and he did what he's been hankering to do for some years - break the land wind-powered speed record, but not by a whisker, but by a massive margin clocking 126.4mph!!!

LANDYACHTS AND KITES ON
SEAPOINT BEACH, IRELAND
THIS COMING WEEKEND
Happy New Year Everyone! Just a reminder for you to get ready for this weekend's (17th and 18th January) sandyachting event on Seapoint Beach, Termonfeckin, Drogheda, Co. Louth - being held by the IPKSA.
It's the most promising weather forecast of any event for a while so it should be good craic and great sailing on both Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday is an early start due to an early low tide and the Kite Buggy contingent from the North plan to be on the beach by 8.30 to set a course and ready to go by 9.30 in order to get the most of the beach as we will probably finish early enough on Saturday.
A great weekend of fun sailing is in store with a few races towards the national championship league planned too. It would be nice to see some faces from the West if possible and we will return the visit West shortly.
This should be another great weekend so do try and lend your support by attending and taking part.
The IPKSA will have their AGM in the Waterside Hotel on Saturday at 5.30pm and most people intend to eat there after the AGM at around 6.30 as the food is excellent.
So if you have any sandyacht, miniyacht, Ludic, Blokart, X-sail, Potty, Standart, Kite Buggy, etc at all you should be there if at all possible - it's going to be great !
More details on the IPKSA website www.ipksa.info
See you on the beach this weekend!

POTTYS GO WILD IN IRELAND
Mid-May last year saw a contingent of English and Irish mini-landyachters descend on the south west of Ireland down on the Dingle Peninsula for what has become an annual miniyacht pilgrimage and among the number is none other than our very own, Gareth Rowland.
In Alan Watson's words: "Well what a week it was! There was at one point a gathering of 19 mini-yachts, 4 Standarts and a Class 5 on our Kerry excursion. There are loads of photos to be sorted out and details on those will follow but for now take a look at the following YouTube link sandyacht holiday and get a taste for what Kerry was like on one of the days, Thursday May 22nd.
The mini-yacht gathering is a loosely-run event - there are no scheduled races, it is merely a week of leisurely, fun sandyachting, tall tales, copious amounts of Guinness and damn good craic. Originally started some years back by Andy Parr and Chris Wright, he event has swelled over the years with first the Irish themselves revelling in the opportunity to scoot along Brandon Bay and Inch Beach with the promise of a Guinness or two at Spillane's Bar at beach end, to this year more than 17 mini-yacht pilots from far and wide.
Gareth sent in regular reports and photos of the fun and frolics in the west of Ireland.

BRANDON BAY GOES POTTY!
|
|
| |
|
17 red Pottys sitting on a beach, 17 red Pottys sitting on a beach, if one red Potty should accidentally sail, there'd be... Potty's all in a row and ready to hit Brandon beach with the Maharees in the background. A contingent of British and Irish landsailors descended on Castlegregory in Ireland for a week of landsailing and good craic in mid-May 2008!

It's easy to see why Brandon Bay in southwest island is a landsailing mecca. In mid-May last year a contingent of mini-yachters got to sail up and down its 17 miles of sand with the Irish countryside as a backdrop on one side and the Atlantic on the other |
|
None other than the superannuitant landsailor himself, Chris Wright.
|
The Irish were just checking the ladies were OK in the Potty!!

Geoff Waterhouse had problems with the large local crabs.

Seventeen Pottys lined up on Brandon Bay was an impressive sight. |

From Gareth Rowland K11: In Ned's Bar in Castlegregory, County Kerry. Just ordered a 20oz t-bone steak. No wind today. Wind expected during week. Having a Guinness for you all! Have wireless in house. Can use Skype.
SUNDAY MAY 18, 2008: 10:57:59PM - TXT
From Gareth Rowland K11: T-bone steak digested. Now working on more Guinness with help of an Irish band. Alan says wind looks like getting better by Wednesday.
MONDAY MAY 19, 2008: 12:44:06PM - TXT
From Gareth Rowland K11: Sailing on Inch Beach today. Segwayed right to end. Very soft. Heading to Dingle Bay Hotel for a Rotary meeting at 1pm then planning on returning to sail my Ludic, the other mini-yacht I brought over.
TUESDAY MAY 20, 2008: 11:24:48PM - PHONE CALL
From Gareth Rowland K11: Sailed one complete lap of Brandon today. Got up to Spillane's Bar. Unfortunately the pub is shut during the day this time of year. Doesn't open till around 4pm. Round trip is about 17 miles in all. Decided to do another lap. Halfway back the wind died and tide came in. Had to be rescued. So set up my Ludic. 100 yards down the beach the wheel fell off! Tomorrow we'll decide what to do. If wind is predictable we'll sail Brandon Bay otherwise we'll go to Inch Beach. I'm packing up Thursday morn and heading home. Rest are staying till Friday. Apparently there is a low pressure off the coast of Ireland but we don't know if it'll track north or hit us square on.
THURSDAY MAY 22, 2008: 11:03:24AM - TXT
From Gareth Rowland K11: Just finished watching the Euros Final in Ned's Bar via some Guinness with nine of us. Sailed up to Spillane's Bar at the top of Brandon Beach but coming back round west had to walk/sail back in light winds.

SMITH CREEK BULLETIN
COW TO COW
Smith Creek, Memorial Day May 24-26, 2008
Hello land sailors! The COW-TO-COW is coming soon - May 24, 25, 26 or more or less. Early this year. That should assure us of great weather!!
The reports on the lake conditions are meager, but we'll have a first-hand assessment in a week or so. We will follow our usual format with landsailing when the wind blows, a potluck dinner, or lunch if appropriate. With so many ATVs
maybe we should think about a structured ride over the mountains or the Reese River Valley.
Our rancher friend, Steve Berg, just beyond Railroad Pass in the Reese River Valley reports that they have had a very dry winter and most of the snow is gone. The playa is dry.
No report on Elsie and Elmer. We're trusting that they survived the winter ravages and resisted any attempt by emissaries of the USA government to change their appearances.

SMITH CREEK UPDATE: Thursday, 22 May 2008 |
The weather forecast is lousy. Suggest you check out at the NOAA National Weather Service website and search for conditions for Rural Southern Lander County.
Several of us are heading out this afternoon to the general area and will probably stay tonight at one of the gravel areas on the west side of Carroll Summit and perhaps explore that area with the ATV's in the morning. We will be at Smith Creek Friday on 722 at one of the gravel areas between the two access roads. If the playa is dry and the wind blows we'll sail but keep the motor homes on the highway or a spot that we can escape a thunder shower.
The Forest Service lands south of Austin in the Reese River Valley are full of gravel roads and many interesting streams and mines. If the playa remains wet we will be there.
Hope to be able to put an umbrella over Elsie.
I just visited our friend Marv Peltier at Renoun Hospital in Reno. Marv appears to have a strong dose of cancer and is in the middle of having a battery of tests run. We will know more of his condition in a few days. His spirts are good and I know that he would appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

What is Landsailing?
There are two types of land yacht sailing at Mablethorpe - Class 3 and Class 5. Depending on wind conditions the larger yachts are capable of speeds in excess of 80mph. The smaller yachts are still capable of reaching 60mph; acceleration from 10-60mph is less than 10 seconds, all this and no engine, no noise.
The Lincolnshire Club has a two-seater yacht which can be used by club members and people who have never sailed before. Also the Secretary, the current British & European Landyacht Champion and a Qualified Instructor has a small yacht suitable for young children. While the two-seater is not available to sail at the above event, tide times for suitable sailing are available.
See you on the Beach!
