Report from Richard Austin, K144

Due to the lack of landyachting in the UK, Anglia Land Yacht Club members Richard and Hilary Austin (K144), Steve Borrill (K115) and Christine Heath (K130) decided on a long weekend trip to the Dutch Open Championships 19th/20th October. After a few e-mails to the Dutch it appeared a reasonable contingent from France, Germany and Belgium were also going - it was looking to be a good event.

THURSDAY 17TH OCTOBER: We left early. Jeep and trailer with 3 Class III yachts and 4 people and all the kit to go via Harwich to Hook of Holland to spend Thursday night in Harlingen ready for the first ferry to Terschelling on Friday morning.

FRIDAY 18TH OCTOBER: Arrived Terschelling about midday and went straight to the beach to unload and rig yachts to get a bit of practice for Saturday. Quite a few yachts already there, reasonably breeze although not a lot of beach. Wind off the sea so a few easy laps up and down the banks to settle back into the cockpit after many weeks off a beach. Christine (K130) showed a good turn of speed and then found a deep gully full of sea and bent her steering bar. Repairs were completed and we left the beach to find and book in to our hotel.

SATURDAY 19TH OCTOBER: Awoke to a fine day but not much wind. Assembled on the beach to find 8 Class 2s, 25 Class 3s, 8 Class 5s and 18 Standarts waiting to go but not much sailable beach. Class 2s and 3s were to sail together and Class 5s with Standarts. The wind altered from not enough to too much when it blew, and back again to light winds throughout the day. No races were run but when sailing was called off for the day some pilots managed a good sail to the end of the island and back on a narrow beach. Saturday night everybody gathered at the Isola Bella pizza house for a meal and chat. It seemed like the Euros again, although Gareth was not there with his fireworks!

SUNDAY 20TH OCTOBER: Similar conditions, variable winds not enough to sail, so as a last resort Floor (See Photo) put in a special request to the local "Wind God" and summoned up enough wind for one Class 2 and 3 race and one Class 5 and Standart race. Steve K115 and Christine K130 achieving a creditable 6th and 9th place respectively out of a fleet of 25.

A second race for each class was tried but Floor's "wind credit" was used up and both were yellow flagged for lack of wind again.

There was much hurried packing up of yachts by many pilots rushing to catch the evening ferry back to the mainland. We had booked for an extra day (Monday) on the island and caught the early Tuesday ferry home. Unfortunately not much sailing was done but Terschelling is as always a very pleasant place to visit.

Report from Floor Lagerwey, Brandaris Landyacht Club

Hello

Last week we had our national championships. The event was sponsorend by JBR Management Consultants. Each pilot who took part received some funding to cover expenses and the ferry company Rederij Doeksen gave a 50% discount on the ferryticket. Despite all this the wind did not show any good will.

On Saturday19th of October the wind was either too strong or there was none ar all so we had no sailing. On the Sunday it looked like the 59 pilots from 7 different countries came for noting but suddenly the wind arrived and all the classes could race.

The prizegiving was at the beach club 'The Zilvermeeuw'. The regatta organisation was perfect. As a matter of fact, this event was the first at Terschelling since the terrible accident in February which claimed the life of Rinus Hogerheyde.

As a mark of respect, the races started with a moment of silence for those who died this year; Rinus and also Carol Cruz who was killed at Lytham St Annes (England).

Many greetings
Floor Lagerwey
Brandaris Landyacht Club.
