From: G.J.Rowland holivans@enterprise.net Subject: WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE (and that's just the yacht!) Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 08:59:07 Just a quicky before I go and get my boots muddy again. A lot of rain last night. The caravan camp has large puddles in the middle. On the way to Louth taking the kids to school all the dykes were full - the most i have ever seen. Attached are a couple of shots of our local river, "Great Eau". It drains from the Lincolnshire Wolds out to Saltfleet some 15 miles. It does not make the headlines but all rivers are the same. The authorities have used the special flood plains to relieve some of the pressure. The same is happening around Lincolnshire on all the smaller rivers. Pumps push the water from the dykes into the river, but with so much water the only way is up. York is expected to have the River Ouse peaking this afternoon. High tide is at 15.00 so some flooding may occur on the tidal stretches as it backs up. Heavy showers for today. If you want to travel on the trains, forget it! London to Leeds can take up to 3.5 hours if you are lucky. Going north you have to take a bus to transfer between flooded sections of track. Roads are still a problem as anything near water has flooding. New places in Wales are being flooded as local rivers burst their banks. Gareth K800 |

From: G.J.Rowland holivans@enterprise.net Subject: NEWS IN AS IT COMES OFF THE TV Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 21:39:24 43 flood warnings on 26 rivers tonight. Shewbury inundated. 400 roads have been affected by flood. medway burst it's banks wrecking boats. Scotland getting a pasting from the rain today. Thames could flood at Teddington Lock as it rises. At York, the Ouse is rising 5.1 metres above normal. Not at danger level yet. 2000 people evacuated south of York. River had not breached the defences, but what do you when they want to go to bed!! iIt has been raining in Mablethorpe for the past 4 hours. Fields are flooded with lakes of water ruining the winter wheat. Lincoln is flooding around the Brayford Wharf, (the large pool of water connected to the Witham and the canals) in the city centre. Rivers in the south of the county are all on flood alert. Will take the camera out tomorrow morning and see the difference in the river levels in our neck of the woods. Talk later Gareth K800 |

From: G.J.Rowland holivans@enterprise.net Subject: LATE TUESDAY NIGHT Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 22:42:38 River Trent is said to be spectactular at Newark as all the fields are flooded along the river. Must be misery for those who are flooded, no end in sight and it's been nearly a week. News headlines are of the attempted 350 million diamond robbery at the Millennium Dome in London. 12 under arrest as they tried to bulldoze their way in. Scotland Yard was waiting for them after the diamon owners were given a tipoff. If you manage a heist like that, you must have somwhere to sell them. The diamonds were swapped for fakes anyway last night. Then the news all USA, USA, USA (elections). Time now 10pm, still raining, now watching BBC News. Will pen it as I see it... Balby in south Yorkshire have had 50,000 sandbags laid but the water keeps rising, expecting a peak at midnight and at 6 am at high tide. The army has retreated in case the banks burst over night. Tides are getting higher all week as the highest tide of the year is next Tuesday. In Selby 500 people evacuated. Two Chinook helicopers are moving tons of sand to fill sand bags. In Doncaster it's the same. Rain water is backing up behind the flood banks as it has nowhere to go. Most places on the rivers are holding their breath tonight, hoping the banks hold out. It's 5 degs and it is still raining , time now 10.30pm. Signing off for now Gareth K800 |
